Women of Aeronautics and Astronautics group takes flight at Cornell

As an undergraduate and a doctoral student majoring in aerospace, aeronautical and astronautical/space engineering at the University of Maryland, Elaine Petro was active in the local chapter of Women of Aeronautics and Astronautics. When she joined the faculty of Cornell’s Sibley School in the summer of 2020 Petro found there was no Cornell-affiliated chapter of WoAA. That sad state of affairs did not last long. Atieh Moridi named the Aref and Manon Lahham Faculty Fellow

Moridi, whose research is focused on advanced materials and manufacturing methods, was recognized for her early contributions to the field of additive manufacturing, and the important role she plays in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging within STEM broadly and within the Cornell Engineering community. Sibley sophomore wins Brooke Owens Fellowship

Sonwalkar joins 46 undergraduates from around the world chosen for recognition by the nationally-acclaimed nonprofit program. Sonwalkar, who is Integration and Test lead of the Cislunar Explorers CubeSat research team in Cornell’s Space Systems Design Studio, a member of the Cornell Mars Rover student project team, an intern at NASA Goddard’s Direct Readout Laboratory, and a John McMullen Dean’s Scholar, will receive an aerospace internship, senior mentorship, and access to a lifelong professional network that now numbers close to 300 former and current “Brookie” Fellows.
