Five Faculty Inducted into the 2023 Class of the AIMBE College of Fellows

The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) has announced the induction of five Cornell Engineering faculty to its 2023 College of Fellows.

Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to a medical and biological engineer. The College of Fellows is comprised of the top two percent of medical and biological engineers. College membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering and medicine research, practice, or education” and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of medical and biological engineering or developing/implementing innovative approaches to bioengineering education."

Fellows were nominated, reviewed, and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows for the following specific contributions to the field:

Christopher A. Alabi, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, “for outstanding contributions to the field of polymer science, drug discovery and drug delivery.”

Nelly Andarawis-Puri, Ph.D., Clare Boothe Luce Associate Professor in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, “for outstanding contributions to the understanding of the pathogenesis of tendinopathy and identifying mechanism to promote repair of injured tendons.”

Shivaun Archer, Ph.D., Senior Lecturer in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, “for outstanding contributions to biomedical engineering education through hands on innovative lab experimentation.”

Susan Daniel, Ph.D., Fred H Rhodes Professor in the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, “for uniquely integrating biomolecular engineering, biophysics, and infection biology to advance understanding of coronavirus entry into cells and antiviral targets.”

Minglin Ma, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering, graduate field faculty in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering, “for outstanding contributions to advancing the cell replacement therapies for type 1 diabetes and the translation of biomaterial research.”

A formal induction ceremony was held during the AIMBE Annual Event at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel in Arlington, Virginia on March 27, 2023. These Cornell Fellows were inducted along with 140 colleagues who make up the AIMBE College of Fellows Class of 2023.

While most AIMBE Fellows hail from the United States, the College of Fellows has inducted Fellows representing 30 countries. AIMBE Fellows are employed in academia, industry, clinical practice and government.

AIMBE Fellows are among the most distinguished medical and biological engineers including 3 Nobel Prize laureates, 17 Fellows having received the Presidential Medal of Science and/or Technology and Innovation, and 205 also inducted to the National Academy of Engineering, 105 inducted to the National Academy of Medicine and 43 inducted to the National Academy of Sciences.
