Three prizes with strong Cornell connections

Three prizes with strong Cornell connections were awarded at the recent ASME International Design & Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers & Information in Engineering (CIE) Conference, which were held concurrently in Buffalo  August 17-20.

• The 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award was presented by the CIE Division to Herb Voelcker, who is the Charles Lake Professor of Mechanical Engineering Emeritus at Cornell, to “recognize a person who has had a significant impact on the use of computers in engineering practice and/or education.” Professor Voelcker was also elected a Life Fellow of ASME. (He has been a Life Fellow of IEEE for a number of years.)
• The 2014 Design Automation Award was presented by the Design Engineering Division to Vadim Shapiro Ph.D. '91 ME “to recognize sustained meritorious contribution to research in design automation.” Voelcker’s first Cornell Ph.D graduate, Shapiro is now the Bernard and Frances Weideman Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and also a professor of computer science at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
• The CIE 2014 Best Paper Award was presented jointly to Horea Ilies and Morad Behandish. Ilies was Shapiro’s first Ph.D graduate at Wisconsin; he is now a Castleman Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Sciences at the University of Connecticut. Morad Behandish is Ilies’ first Ph.D student at Connecticut.
