MAE Prof. Matt Miller recently named Associate Director

MAE's Prof. Matt Miller was recently named Associate Director of the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). CHESS, located on the Cornell Campus at the Wilson Laboratory, is "a user-oriented National Facility that provides state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation facilities to the scientific community". Miller and his research group have been CHESS users for over a decade. They use the high energy x-ray diffraction to understand
the multiscale behavior of structural materials like titanium, aluminum and nickel used in aircraft, automobiles and other important engineering application. Miller's group has built a number of in-situ loading machines for use at CHESS, that mimic processing and performance conditions.
Miller collaborates extensively on this work with Sibley School colleague, Paul Dawson, whose work focuses on building microscale material models using finite elements and numerical methods. Miller's role at CHESS will
include further development of the structural materials capabilities including deeper interactions between experiments and simulations. He also supervises several Sibley School Master of Engineering and Senior Design projects centered at CHESS each year.
