Former students and colleagues of Francis Moon, J.C. Ford Professor emeritus of Mechanical Engineering, are holding a Special Symposium in honor of his 75th birthday. The Symposium will be held as part of the US National Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics held at Michigan State University, in East Lansing Michigan, on June 16, 17 2014. A dozen former PhD students of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (TAM) will present papers in his honor. Moon received his PhD from TAM at Cornell in 1967 under the late Prof YH Pao, and later returned to Cornell in 1975. He was Chair of TAM from 1980-87 and was Director of the Sibley School from 1987-1992. He supervised about 30 doctoral students during his tenure at Cornell. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1996. Moon will present a paper at this symposium "What happened to Chaos Theory?", based on his new book "Social Networks in the History of Innovation and Invention".
