Malika Grayson Wins National NSBE Award

An MAE graduate student was awarded the Mike Shinn Distinguished Member of the Year by the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE).

Malika Grayson, (PhD, ’16, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering) was selected for one of the highest honors awarded to graduate students by the NSBE.

The Mike Shinn NSBE Distinguished Member of the Year award is given to a female and male NSBE member who exemplifies the NSBE mission and who demonstrate high scholastic performance, dedicated service to the Society and other organizations, and who possess high professional promise. This is one of the few times where the award is given to students from the same college.

Malika has been studying the optimization of buildings and structures to better harness wind energy within the Laboratory of Intelligent Machine Systems, the late Professor Ephrahim Garcia’s group). Her dissertation is entitled “Urban Wind: Impact of building geometry on potential wind energy yield.” Malika is the co-director of the Graduate Society of Women Engineers and has been a member of NSBE for four years and the community service and pre-collegiate chair for the past three years. Under her leadership, the group has invested hundreds of hours of community service, including 205 hours of volunteer work last year. She was instrumental in expanding NSBE’s involvement with Ithaca’s Southside Community Center and created and hosted an engineering day at the Beverly J. Martin Elementary School. She has also forged strong partnerships with the Science and Math Saturday Academy and reactivated the Ithaca City High School NSBE Jr. organization this past August. The group recent traveled to the NSBE national conference.  In addition to the Mike Shinn award, Malika was also awarded the Board of Corporate Affiliates Scholarship as well as the Collegiate Member of the Month for September.

According to the NSBE, those selected for this award serve as role models for the entire NSBE membership. The award was given during the NSBE annual convention on March 28 in Anaheim, California during the Golden Touch Award ceremony.
