A metal–elastomer-foam composite that can be formed in three dimensions is presented by R. F. Shepherd and co-workers on page 2801. The composite varies dramatically in mechanical properties—from rubbery to stiff—enabling shape change. It also stores shape memory, self-heals, and welds into monolithic structures from smaller components.
