this past weekend in Maryland and took first in Design, Endurance, and Overall!
Cornell’s Baja SAE Racing Team made a very successful trip to Maryland last week for the Baja SAE Competition held in Baltimore between May 7 and May 11. The team took second place for Suspension, third place for Acceleration, first place for Design, first place for Endurance, and first place Overall. This impressive performance comes just a month after Cornell’s second place Overall finish at the Baja SAE competition in Auburn, Alabama in April.
Teams must build an off-road vehicle with a Briggs & Stratton 10-hp (7.5-kW) Intek Model 20 engine that is capable of carrying one person 190 cm (75 in) tall weighing 113 kg (249 lb). At the competition, the vehicle is tested on a variety of terrain, including rocks, sand jumps, logs, steep inclines, mud, or shallow water. The vehicle must also be able to handle all types of weather. The competition involves a series of both static and dynamic events, and teams are awarded a score for each event for a total of 1000 possible points over all the events.
The SAE Collegiate Baja Design Series of competitions is held every year and is sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers. The series consists of three competitions, culminating this year with an event in Portland, Oregon at the end of May. Cornell’s Big Red Racing team will now travel to Oregon to go for the Iron Team award. To win the Iron Team award, a team must compete in all three North American competitions and have the highest cumulative point total. Cornell’s Baja SAE team won the Iron Team award in 2014.
The team’s faculty advisor is Assistant Professor Olivier Desjardins of Cornell’s Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
