Biomedical Mechanics

Mechanical failure of biological materials is the cause of many disease processes and mechanical forces plays critical regulatory roles in growth and development of organs and tissues. The program in Biomedical Mechanics within the Sibley School of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering has a rich 40+ year history of collaboration between engineers, life scientists, veterinary, and medical professionals resulting in over 30 patents related to joint replacements, soft tissue implants, and biolubrication.

The combination of top ranked engineering, veterinary, and medical schools has enabled Cornell to pursue unparalleled breadth and depth in biomechanical inquiry. Our research topics extend across 10 orders of magnitude in length, from nanoscale mechanics in cells and extracellular matrices to mechanical function in whole organs and organisms. Students and Faculty in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering are pushing the frontiers of biomechanical analysis using new theories, engineering micro- and nanotechnologies, computational models, imaging modalities, experimental systems and design. Research in Biomedical Mechanics is applied directly to medical care through the HSS-Sibley School Institute of Orthopaedic Biomechanics, which links the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with the top-ranked orthopaedic program in the country at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.

The Biomedical Mechanics area has vibrant participation from a diverse population of graduate students from the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering as well as the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering. Biomedical Mechanics faculty, postdocs, and PhD students participate in a weekly graduate seminar series that started in 1996, with current attendance of 20-30. This seminar is primarily a vehicle for PhD students and fellows to present work, and also involves professional development and outside speakers.
