Swanson Engineering Simulation Program

The Swanson Engineering Simulation Program in the Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University has been established with the goal of integrating computer-based simulations into the curriculum in a systematic manner. This program has been made possible through a generous gift to the school by Dr. John Swanson, the founder of ANSYS Inc. and an alumnus of the school. With computers getting cheaper and more powerful, and engineering software tools maturing, computer-based simulation and analysis is of increasing importance in engineering science and design.

A revised curriculum is being developed in which computing is coordinated around a core set of software tools. Instruction in these tools will be geared towards teaching students how to use these sophisticated tools intelligently and will emphasize how to understand and interpret the results using fundamental theoretical and numerical concepts. In the process, students will be able to improve their computing skills while at the same time strengthening their grasp of the fundamentals.

The core set of tools adopted by us are:

  • ANSYS:  Used for simulating the response of solid structures to various types of loading such as mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic.
  • CHEMKIN: A collection of programs that enables the incorporation of complex chemical kinetics into simulations of reacting flow.
  • FLUENT: A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package used for the simulation and analysis of fluid flow problems.
  • Pro/ENGINEER: Used for solid modeling and computer-aided design (CAD).
  • Solid Edge: Used for solid modeling and computer-aided design (CAD).
  • Working Model 2D: Used for two-dimensional kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanical systems.
