Tobias deBoer's main area of interest is the thermodynamic analysis and optimal design of pulse-tube cryocoolers. These devices are replacing Stirling cryocoolers in space as well as ground-based applications. They use either a dual orifice configuration, or an inertance tube. The former type is suitable for operation at low frequencies, the latter for operation at high frequencies. Both types incorporate a regenerator. It appears that thermal and dissipation losses in the regenerator severely limit the maximum attainable performance. Regenerators also are used in Stirling engines, where they lead to similar limitations. An area of recent interest is the rupture energy of pendular rings, with application to the attachment strength of thin films in MEMS devices. |
