Activity-Driven Asynchronous Circuits and Systems

Dr. Manohar's website can be viewed here.

Abstract:

Asynchronous activity-driven circuits do not use clock signals for
their operation. Such systems are reactive and operate in an
event-driven manner, resulting in low power operation.

We present a number of activity-driven computation structures, and show
how they can be efficiently implemented with asynchronous VLSI. We
discuss how they can be used to model networks for detecting complex
conditions in systems in which parameters change
rapidly.

Asynchronous circuits have previously been used to develop neuromorphic
chips to model the retina and cochlea. We discuss potential
applications of asynchronous systems in modeling the human nervous
system.
