This series of Symposia on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations provides a stimulating and constructive forum for researchers specializing on the problems of fixed and vibrating bluff body flows. The formal sessions consist of single sessions including invited talks with ample time outside the formal sessions for participants to meet in a convivial atmosphere.
The Symposium on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV-5) will follow the spirit set in the Forum on Advances in the Understanding of Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV-1), which was part of the 1998 ASME-FED Summer Meeting in Washington DC, the IUTAM Symposium on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV-2) held in Marseille in 2000, the Symposium on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV-3) held in Port Douglas in 2002, and the last conference held in Santorini in June 2005 (BBVIV-4).
The Symposium will take place over four days, starting on Wednesday, 12 December 2007 and ending on Saturday, 15 December 2007. It will consist of single plenary sessions with invited lectures (40 minutes), oral presentations (20 minutes), poster presentations (3 minutes), and discussions on special topics. Selected papers from the conference will be invited to be published in the Journal of Fluids and Structures.Scope of Conference
BBVIV-5 will focus on aspects of the dynamics of vortex structures found in the wakes of fixed and oscillating bluff bodies, including vortices resulting from shear layer convective instability and near-wake absolute instability. Experimental, computational and analytical studies will be presented on topics such as the following (not exhaustive):All submitted papers will be peer reviewed under the coordination of a scientific advisory panel. The conference will keep the tradition of inviting internationally renowned keynote speakers to the conference.
- Active and passive control of wakes
- Aspects of vortex-induced vibration of bluff bodies
- Vortex-induced vibrations at very high Reynolds numbers
- Vortex-induced noise due to bluff bodies
- Rising and Falling bodies in a fluid
- Controlled vibration of bluff bodies
- Vehicle aerodynamics
- The 3-D structure of wakes from nominally two-dimensional bluff bodies
- Mode changes in the wakes of circular cylinders
- Bodies in unsteady/oscillatory flows
- Relation between wake structure and the force experienced by a bluff body

The selection of presentations at the conference will be made on the basis of peer review, by two independent referees, of each Full Paper. A volume of accepted papers will be available to each registrant at the Conference and for sale afterwards. Following the Conference, a selection of papers will be made by the Scientific Committee.CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGSSubmission and Format of Full Papers
The Full Paper will be from two to four (2-4) A4 pages in length, and will be formatted in single column format. Useful key figures are included within this page limit. Arial font should be used in ten-point size or equivalent. Margins to be no less than 2 cm. At the beginning should be centred the paper title, authors' names and affiliations, and a contact e-mail address. Please include all relevant material (text and accompanying figures) into a single document. If the files are large, please compress them using a standard utility before emailing them (limit is 5Mb compressed).
The Full Papers should be submitted electronically, as a (Portable Document Format) file, whose filename should contain the name of the first author (e.g., “Wilkinson-BBVIV5.pdf”).The PDF file should be sent by e-mail to: Thomas.Leweke@irphe.univ-mrs.fr.
Please send, as a part of the e-mail, the request for us to "Notify Sender" (or similar), so that we may very simply confirm receipt of your submission.
Printed copies of papers presented at the conference can be purchased by writing to the Chairman (email: cw26@cornell.edu). The price of the hardcopy volume plus CD copy will cover postage and handling.
The Conference will be held in a magnificent resort hotel, located on the beach:
