PROGRAM

The series of Symposia on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations provides a stimulating and constructive forum for researchers specializing on the problems of fixed and vibrating bluff body flows.

The 4th Conference on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV-4) will follow the spirit set in the Forum on Advances in the Understanding of Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV-1), which was part of the 1998 ASME-FED Summer Meeting in Washington, DC, USA, the IUTAM Symposium on Bluff Body Wakes and Vortex-Induced Vibrations (BBVIV-2) held in Marseille in 2000, and the 3rd conference in this series (BBVIV-3) held in Port Douglas, Queensland, Australia in 2002.

The Conference will take place over four days, starting after lunch on Tuesday, 21 June 2005, and ending early afternoon on Friday, 24 June 2005.  It will consist of single plenary sessions with invited lectures (40 minutes), oral presentations (20 minutes), poster presentations (3 minutes), and discussions on special topics, with ample time outside the formal sessions for participants to meet in a convivial atmosphere. Selected papers from the conference will be invited to be published in the Journal of Fluids and Structures.

Scope of Conference

BBVIV-4 will focus on aspects of the dynamics and instabilities of vortex structures found in the wakes of fixed and oscillating bluff bodies. Experimental, computational and analytical studies will be presented on topics such as the following (not exhaustive):

Stability of wakes

Active and passive control of wakes

Aspects of vortex-induced vibration of bluff bodies

Three-dimensional wake structure

Vortices resulting from shear layer convective instability
and near-wake absolute instability

Mode changes in the wakes of two- and three-dimensional bodies

Bodies in unsteady/oscillatory flows

Relation between wake structure and the force experienced by a bluff body

Vortex induced vibrations at very high Reynolds numbers

All submitted papers will be peer reviewed under the coordination of a scientific advisory panel. The conference will keep the tradition of inviting internationally renowned keynote speakers to the conference.

PARTICIPATION
The selection of presentations at the conference will be made on the basis of peer review, by two independent referees, of each Full Paper received by the strict deadline of 18 February 2005. A volume of accepted papers will be available to each registrant at the Conference and for sale afterwards. Following the Conference, a selection of papers will be made by the Scientific Committee for expansion into the format required for the Journal of Fluids and Structures, in a special volume to appear late 2005 – early 2006.

Submission and Format of Full Papers

The Full Paper will be from two to four (2-4) A4 pages in length, and will be formatted in single column format. Useful key figures are included within this page limit. Arial font should be used in ten-point size or equivalent. Margins to be no less than 2 cm. At the beginning should be centred the paper title, authors' names and affiliations, and a contact e-mail address. Please include all relevant material (text and accompanying figures) into a single document. If the files are large, please compress them using a standard utility before emailing them (limit is 5Mb compressed).

The Full Papers should be submitted electronically, as a (Portable Document Format) file, whose filename should contain the name of the first author (e.g., “Wilkinson-BBVIV4.pdf”).

The PDF file should be sent by e-mail to: Thomas.Leweke@irphe.univ-mrs.fr.

Please send, as a part of the e-mail, the request for us to "Notify Sender" (or similar), so that we may very simply confirm receipt of your submission.

CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS

Printed copies of papers presented at the conference can be purchased by writing to the Chairman (email: cw26@cornell.edu). The price of the hardcopy volume plus CD copy will cover postage and handling.

LOCATION & ACCOMMODATION

The conference will be held at the Santorini Image Hotel in the village of Messaria on Santorini Island in the Greek Aegean Sea. Rooms at special conference rates have been reserved in a number of hotels near the conference venue.

Booking of Accommodation for BBVIV-4 is handled centrally by Heliotopos Conferences, and can be done online at http://bbviv4.conferences.gr. This web site also contains a large amount of additional information on Santorini and on practical matters related to the conference.

REGISTRATION

The registration fee for BBVIV-4 will be 450 Euro for full-fee paying registrants, and a reduced rate of 300 Euro for full-time students, if registration is made before 21 May 2005; afterwards a surcharge of 100 Euro will apply. These prices include the volume of Full Papers, a copy of the Conference Proceedings, welcome reception, banquet, three lunches, and morning and afternoon tea and coffee.

Each contribution must be accompanied by (at least) one separate registration, in order for the presentation to be included in the conference program and in the "Proceedings".

Registration is handled by Heliotopos Conferences. Please visit the corresponding web site at http://bbviv4.conferences.gr for further details and for online registration.

SOCIAL FUNCTIONS

The Conference will mix informality with maximum opportunity for interaction between participants. A welcome reception, including buffet, at the Conference Centre will be offered to all participants and accompanying persons on the evening of the first day of the conference. On the Thursday evening, a banquet will be held at the famous restaurant Selene in Fira. One free afternoon during the conference will afford the opportunity to visit some of the magnificent nearby sites.

For accompanying persons, a number of activities and tours are proposed during the conference. Pre- and post-conference tours are also available. Booking can be made online through Heliotopos Conferences at http://bbviv4.conferences.gr, where further details are available.
