Emerson Manufacturing Teaching Lab

The Emerson Manufacturing Teaching Lab houses the Product Realization Facility and the Materials Processing and Testing Lab. The Emerson lab is designed to support students in pursuit of their studies at Cornell.

The Product Realization Facility is located in the front section of Emerson. It is equipped with a variety of conventional and CNC machine tools. This area is available to students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Cornell community to facilitate completion of their projects and/or coursework. Sibley School students use the facility for various projects in their curriculum, including laboratory sessions in courses such as M&AE 2250(225), Mechanical Synthesis. Many users fabricate items related to design projects: HEV, Formula SAE and other projects within the engineering college, as well as other team projects throughout the University. Graduate students fabricate equipment needed by faculty for research projects. Emerson may even be used for personal fabrication projects. Machines in this area are designated for beginning and instructional use or for advanced or green apron use. Instruction is provided in the use of the facility's equipment and is required.

Anyone who has had the proper training on the available equipment may use the shop for fabrication of parts made from the various metal alloys. Not allowed are: wood, phenolic, epoxy glass, and other materials that create large amounts of residual dust. Metal alloys are the only permissible materials allowed. (There are some exceptions to this rule that should be discussed with shop personnel as the situation arises.)

The shop keeps a small inventory of tooling, but Emerson does not have all the tooling that might be necessary for all projects. It may be necessary to purchase your own specialized tooling.

The shop currently has a variety of machine tools - conventional and CNC. In most cases, more than one of each is available. Please be aware of the hours of operation of the lab and the limitations of each machine, which can be found here.

If you are interested in using the Product Realization Facility you will need to review the Operating Rules and Procedures and complete the Basic Machining Course. Prospective users with previous experience may qualify for exemption from this requirement. Contact George Petry with questions.
