Matt has a Bachelor and
Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University, with a
specialty in Thermofluids. He also has
an Associates Degree in Automotive Technology from Northern Virginia Community
College. In his studies at Northeastern,
he designed and built the Laminar Flame Laboratory. He is continuing his research there as a
consultant to the Mechanical, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
Department’s Combustion Group in its study of liquid fuel detonation. He has worked on other projects including: a
flame analysis study on small burners and heat transfer and fluid studies on
telecommunication hardware. Matt is a
member of ASME, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Before running instructional
labs, Matt was in the auto business for over fifteen years: one year as an associate with the Global
Automotive Group at DRI, eight years as the founder and president of Cambridge
Carworks, Inc., a progressive auto repair and body shop in Cambridge
Massachusetts, and prior to and concurrently as a Certified ASE Master
Automotive and Air Conditioning Technician.
While at DRI, Matt
contributed to the Market and Technology Assessment of Gasoline Direct
Injection and a global study of the differential market for a major supplier of
rear axles. He was also responsible for
upgrading and maintaining the Automotive Group’s extensive array of component
supplier and technology databases, working on the North and South American
manufacturing markets.
Cambridge Carworks, Inc. was
a progressive auto repair shop founded by Matt in 1988. The shop performed full service auto repairs
and included a body shop. The shop was
founded on the idea of being a one-stop garage to car ‘families’. Clinics for car owners, up-to-date training
for the employees and detailed ‘on the car’ estimates were some of the elements
of the business. Cambridge Carworks also
focused on performing environmentally sound repairs – the use of freon
recyclers long before they were mandated, recycling and using reconditioned
antifreeze, and separating and recycling solid waste. The City of Cambridge, Massachusetts
recognized Cambridge Carworks with an award as one of the City’s Best Business
Solid Waste Recyclers when they instituted their mandated solid waste recycling
program. In addition, Matt was a
Certified ASE Automotive and Air Conditioning Technician, certification he kept
current through extensive training and continuing education.
Matt lives in Ithaca, New
York with his wife, four daughters, five dogs, four cats, two rabbits, and
numerous goldfish.
